A Future Taking Root in Our Community

4/9/2026

Before the first new tree canopy rises over our community, something deeper is already taking root: hope, responsibility, and a renewed relationship between community and land.

For the Native American Advancement Corporation, this work is not simply about planting trees. It is about restoring balance. It is about preparing the ground so that future generations inherit not only shade and cleaner air, but a stronger sense of belonging, stewardship, and possibility. In NAAC’s vision, every tree planted today is an act of care for the next seven generations.

NAAC’s work begins from an Indigenous understanding that caring for the land is also caring for the community. Rooted in Southern New Jersey and led by Indigenous-centered values, NAAC is building a tree initiative that blends environmental justice, education, workforce development, and long-term stewardship.

That work is already taking shape.

So far, NAAC has placed staff in its Arborist Apprenticeship program, strengthening a local workforce prepared to care for trees not just at planting, but throughout their lives. The team has completed a tree inventory and identified priority areas in our community where new tree canopies will be planted soon. These steps may sound technical, but they are foundational. They ensure that future planting is thoughtful, equitable, and responsive to the places that most need shade, beauty, and environmental relief.

At the same time, NAAC has been bringing the community into the work. Through several workshops, staff have educated adults and children about the importance of tree care, the benefits of a healthy canopy, and our responsibility to future generations. In NAAC’s approach, trees are not decorative extras. They are part of a living system that supports cleaner air, cooler neighborhoods, stronger ecosystems, and healthier communities.

This message is especially meaningful in underserved communities, where environmental burdens are often heavier, and access to green infrastructure has too often been unequal. NAAC’s program responds by centering local voices, local learning, and local leadership. The goal is not simply to plant trees in our community, but to help residents see themselves as part of the long-term care and protection of their environment.

That is why workforce development is such an important part of this story. NAAC staff are currently working toward certifications that will open pathways to higher levels of education, technical expertise, and service beyond this grant program. The impact of this investment will continue long after the first new canopies are planted. It is creating a stronger foundation for Indigenous and community-led environmental leadership in South Jersey.

What makes this work powerful is that it grows on multiple levels at once. It restores land. It builds knowledge. It prepares a skilled workforce. And it reminds young people that environmental stewardship is not separate from culture, identity, or community well-being; it is part of all three.

In our community, the next chapter is coming soon, as identified planting areas begin to take shape as a new canopy. But the deeper story is already underway. It is a story of preparation, education, and commitment. A story rooted in the belief that when communities are trusted to lead, they can grow solutions that last.

For NAAC, this is not only about what will be planted this season. It is about what will be possible for the next seven generations.
